Teaching Social Skills With Video Modeling

My students need a camcorder to engage in video modeling strategies that will help them learn social skills.

Northampton, MA Grades 3-5

I teach elementary school students with autism in a public school setting. The students that I work with are in grades 3-5. I teach the students in my classroom and in the general education setting. Social skills development is a large focus in the program. Part of our curriculum includes weekly outings to address social skills and to support families in being able to bring children into the community successfully. In addition, we use reverse inclusion by having social groups during lunch club, science projects, and other small group inclusion activities to promote friendships and social skills development.

People with autism often lack the social skills needed to be successful in their communities. The students in my program are no exception. In order to develop friendships, they require a great deal of support and education in pro-social behaviors. Teaching these skills can be challenging due to the unpredictable nature of social interactions. In addition, my students are visual learners; therefore, they require curriculum to be presented visually in order to be a successful learner. Currently, we do not have access to a video camera that is portable, and that would enable us to film our students then have them view it for teaching purposes.

Research in teaching social skills to people with autism has demonstrated that video modeling is a powerful tool for teaching students both the skills needed to engage in appropriate interactions, and the ability to "read" social situations effectively. My students need access to a video camera that can provide visual feedback and examples of socially appropriate behaviors. The camera would be used in a variety of ways. The students could view themselves during community outings and school activities so that their pro-social behaviors can be highlighted. The playback would also be used to teach more subtle skills such as reading body language and facial expressions. These genuine interactions would provide material to develop a structured lesson, making instruction more explicit and based on real life experiences.

By providing my students with a video camera, you will expand their opportunities to develop meaningful friendships and socially appropriate behaviors that will increase their success in the school and community. In addition, you will increase their excitement and engagement in learning activities by providing a tool that will allow them to see themselves in genuine, positive social interactions. In doing this, you will very likely be contributing to their self-confidence and success in their daily interactions with peers and adults.
