Help bring current technology to a rural school! I teach third grade reading, math, and science at a Title I school in a high-poverty area.

In affluent areas, many students may receive access to computers, the internet, and a variety of technological resources in both their homes and schools. However, the majority of students in my classroom are from homes at or below the poverty level; this means that a majority of our students are likely to be unfamiliar with the wealth of information that can be gleaned through technological resources. An LCD projector will allow me and my students to seek, analyze, and evaluate information from a wide variety of sources, becoming educated decision-makers and problem-solvers. Daily access to computers and the internet enable our students to communicate, collaborate, publish and produce, using knowledge from around the world all within the boundaries of the classroom or local school.

Having an LCD projector in my classroom would allow me to create daily, interactive and engaging lessons for my students that utilize online resources such as United Streaming. This type of instruction, which is particularly important in 3rd grade because of high stakes testing for No Child Left Behind, will allow students more familiar exposure to the variety of content materials that can be found on the internet, as well as the process of finding and using information that is reliable and from trustworthy sources. Students would also benefit from having this technology in the classroom in a variety of ways. With installation of LCD projectors, students could create PowerPoint presentations or other documents to share with the class, which would provide them with strong knowledge bases and skills in the area of technology usage.

Without your help, my students and I will continue to be limited to transparencies and overheads, blackboards and chalk; providing updated technology at a school like mine will make a great impact on the holistic education of my students this year and in the years to come.
