Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Remember those practice problems you completed in primary school? The endless math problems where you thought two-digit addition was the largest obstacle you had ever faced, the worksheets that utilized repetitive writing strategies (and thus made you write the letter "a" the five-year-old equivalent of a thousand times), and the geography worksheets that teach about your community with cliche pictures of libraries, schools, and hospitals? Well, with few exceptions, those strategies are still employed in schools around the country. In my first grade classroom in New York City, I have students whose primary language is Spanish, some of whom have parents who don't speak English, and some of whom come to school as an escape from home--not the other way around. With those challenges facing me, I try to make learning as fun as possible for my students, and I see results with them by the end of the year. The children work hard in their math, english, history, and other notebooks all year round, but they also need worksheets--and a lot of them. Each child takes home about 5 sheets of homework a day, every school day. In class, each child uses about 10 printed worksheets a day, worksheets that form the basis of almost all of my lessons. Additionally, I have administrative work that must be completed on the students' behalf. Each child has a reading, writing, math, history/geography, and progress portfolio, in which I keep tabs on each child's work and progress in various subject areas--and all the forms that I fill out that constitute those portfolios are preprinted copies. I love working for these children, and I don't (and can't) let the mounds of paperwork I have to manage get in the way of teaching each and every child something new every day. There's just one problem--copy machines in my school are nearly non-existent! My school goes from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade, with about 3-4 teachers in each grade. A lot of grades don't make copies of books, as the upper grades use textbooks, workbooks, and loose-leaf paper as the predominant basis for their classes. The grades lower than mine use hands-on projects to teach the children, so Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten teachers don't make many copies. First grade is the grade that uses copies the most, since it is the transition grade from hands-on projects to test-prep and textbooks. However, my school's only copy machine is often broken, and when it happens to be working there is a strict four-sheet copy limit enforced. Additionally, school-wide-related copy jobs take precedence (imagine having to make tens of handouts PER DAY for each student in a 600+ student school before you make copies for teachers--do you think the copy machine will be working often?). I therefore have to sometimes cut down on the work that I give to the students, and the children are therefore less challenged than I know they can be. The solution to my problem: a copy machine! A new Xerox copy machine would be perfect for the numerous copies my class needs every day. With each child receiving approximately 2,000 sheets per year (2,000 sheets times 25 students = 50,000 sheets per year for my class alone), the copy machine would be primed and ready for nearly every worksheet my children could complete--and they can then marvel at their own work! Remember those worksheets you would bring home in first grade, proudly and happily displaying to mom or dad? The worksheets that got placed on the refrigerator for all the World to see? The worksheets that showed your mastery of simple probability, which at the time made you seem like the smartest kid on the block? Those are the worksheets and forms you'll be helping to make for my class's children--not only this year, but for years to come.
