We Want To Experiment!

My students need science materials including slides, thermometers, a magnet lab, and an electricity lab.

I currently teach thirty enthusiastic first graders. My school is located in a low income area of Chicago. My school is located in a high-need community where most of my students do not have the necessary tools that they need for a typical school day. I know my students love science. They seem to love learning about animals, colors, magnets and our five senses. The thing is that my students are so bored with our science curriculum! Our science textbooks are wonderful and colorful, but my students are too young and too busy to sit still and look at textbooks. I am asking for your help in getting my students fun, exciting, science materials to supplement our science textbooks. The materials that I am asking for will allow my students to experiment more with science and to learn more about how things work and more importantly why they work the way that they do! The items that I am asking for include a electricity lab so the students can experiment safely with electricity using batteries and light bulbs, a magnet lab so students can explore magnetism hands-on, thermometers so the students can experiment more about temperature, and some prepared slides so my students can finally use the microscopes that we have in our classroom to look at and compare animal hairs and parts of plants close up! All the items that I am asking for will allow groups of students to work together, and learn about science in a fun, interesting, hands-on way. You can make it possible for my students to have an opportunity to learn to really enjoy science an early age. By teaching first graders, I feel that it is my duty and responsibility to give them all that I can, and I feel that you can help make my dream a reality. Who knows, maybe a student from my class will become a great scientist!
