Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English in a Title-I school with a population of 3000 students that is 95% Hispanic, and most of those students speak English as a second language. My students are interested in learning, but the materials we use are non-engaging to most of the kids. When I have introduced them to newer, more modern literature titles, their desire to learn jumps because they relate better to the materials. These kids want learn, but they also want to be interested in what they read. I am trying to show them that reading is important and that reading is really how we learn.

We need books by living writers rather than old stories by dead, white guys. My students are interested in reading about true situations. I think non-fiction is the key to teaching them to love reading.

I need a class set (38-40 books) of Jon Krakauer's book, "Into the Wild." This book centers on the story of a young man who eschews all the things we take for granted: money, cars, clothes, family. He sets off across the United States to Alaska to carve out a piece of the American Dream. My students are interested in this story because it might show them how simple it is to change their lives and find the value in having meaningful experiences.
