Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Often times when children are greeted with a non-fiction piece of writing, it is in the form of a passage as part of a comprehension test. This is due to the rigorous amount of state-wide testing being conducted in schools across the country. It has even become common knowledge that many schools and classroom teachers prefer to "teach to the test", rather than research the standards needed and create personalized and innovative lesson plans to reach the varying needs of the children in the classroom. I am very against the idea of "teaching to the test" and take my responsibility to be a professional, and find every alternative form of teaching while reaching all of my students needs, very seriously. I also believe it is crucial that we teach our children at a young age how to cherish and appreciate all forms of writing, including non-fiction.

Non-fiction is a gateway into worlds our children could never even dream of! It can sweep you off of your feet and send you flying into Egypt, learning how the pharaoh of the past ruled and what innovations during that time period made ideas and technology of today possible. Non-fiction reading can let a child experience the world through a past president, scientist or engineer, allowing them to dream up all of the many things that they themselves might accomplish! It is for these reasons that I believe it is critical to teach our next generation about our past, present and future social issues, technological advances and even culture changes around the world. What better way to do this than through non-fiction reading? Although my school is not economically advantaged, these children have a strong drive to learn and will instantly be drawn to these books and topics if given the opportunity.

This is why I am asking for your help in providing my classroom a resource for my students that is crucial in helping them understand and appreciate the amazing world around them. This can be done easily through having a wealth of resources (books) available to them, as well as a center that they may work with while I am with small groups in language arts. Too often social studies and science are neglected in favor of teaching only math and language arts due to the state-wide testing. However, I believe there is no reason we cannot teach them side-by-side as an integrated unit of curriculum.

The effect that this non-fiction package will have on my classroom is indescribable. This non-fiction library and center will be viewed by my students as interesting and inviting, rather than simply "another passage they need to analyze and answer". The autonomy to WANT to learn and be MOTIVATED to find out about the world around them must be instilled NOW. Please take a moment to consider the impact that these students, aware of world issues and enchanted with the sciences, might have in 10 years. These students whose class you help might contain the world's next leading biologist, whose interests were first realized while in fourth grade . . .
