Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an inner city second grade teacher. I teach all subjects and have 30 children in my class. It is a very high-need public school and we do not have a lot of art supplies. As a matter of fact, my children only get art once a week. Though the teacher is awesome, he can only do simple projects as he has all 30 children to himself with no help at all.

"Arigato, Sensai!" I am a very lucky teacher! I won the Japan Fulbright Memorial Scholarship Award and was sent to Japan for three weeks this past October. My entire school year is being focused around Japan. This trip is sponsored by the Japanese, so that American teachers can come back to their schools and educate their entire community about Japan. I had the most amazing experience of my life and am now teaching my second graders all about this incredible country. We were required to write detailed lesson plans on how we are going to educate our students and school. Fortunately, for me, one of my student's fathers was stationed in Okinawa. How lucky am I? He is also an artist. He is going to come into my class and create a beautiful mural with my class to be hung permanently in our school. Since there are so many budget cuts these days, we have very few art supplies. The acrylic paints and paintbrushes we need to do this mural are very expensive and I only want to use the proper materials. My students have already created their own books about Japan and this is the next step in my lesson plans.

My second graders are slowly becoming experts about Japan. I returned to my classroom on November 1st. Since then we have learned all about Japan and each child wrote his/her own book. They are awesome! Next we are going to create a mural of Japanese gardens and a temple. Of all the things I taught my class and the pictures they saw, it was the gardens and temples that impressed them the most. Once the mural is done, I will be setting up a Japanese Cultural Center in an empty classroom. The mural will be the highlight of the Center, with the children's books and various souvenirs surrounding it. The Center will benefit my entire school and especially my children. Imagine their pride in having their beautiful mural hanging up for all to see!

Through your donation of paints and paintbrushes we will be able to create a magnificent piece of artwork to hang in school for ever and ever. I can just see the look of joy on the faces of my thirty students as they educate their peers about Japan and work in the Cultural Center. It will be a year that they will never ever forget! The title of my project is "Arigato, Sensai." This means, Thank you, teacher. They say this to me all the time now and soon, I'll be able to say, "Arigato", to you!
