Every student needs someone to read to them! A listening center will provide each student with the joy of being read to. My fourth grade class consists of a high percentage of English Language Learners. Many of their parents do not speak English and the students do not have literary resources in their homes. Often, both parents work evening shifts in the hospitality industry, and the students take care of siblings. Although these students receive daily reading instruction and support through English Language Development classes, additional modeling of fluent language usage would make a significant difference in their reading development.

Ideally, every child should be read to daily. Students love the brief read aloud period in school each day, but it would be wonderful to supplement with additional reading support.

The eight-person listening center would allow groups of students to listen to books on CD as they follow along with the printed materials. Fourth graders need to be able to read and comprehend more complex books and texts. A plethora of materials, both fiction and non-fiction, are now available for listening centers. My English Language Learners need support to decipher and enjoy chapter books and grade level text materials.

Imagine the joy and excitement of a student being able to read along with a book, without their fluency constantly being interrupted to decode individual words. Your help will ensure that my students receive the additional support that is not available in their homes. My students love books! Please help me support their success by helping me instill reading confidence, joy, and excitement through use of the listening center.
