It's Getting NOISY In Here! I can't Hear Myself THINK!

My students need a "Yacker Tracker" and a large digital timer.

I have the pleasure of teaching kindergarten at a very small charter school in a low-income neighborhood. We are a refuge for students K-8 who are exposed to gang violence, the effects of drug use and distribution, and desperate, broken families. All our students qualify for free breakfast and lunches. Our ethnic mix is approximately 60% African American and 40% Hispanic.

The students at our school are SO LOUD! They yell even when they are right next to each other! I hate having to try to talk over students and I think an easy, fun solution would be to have a visual and auditory signal for their noise level. They also take a long time to clean up and are very noisy at that time.

A "Yacker Tracker" is a mini-traffic light that serves as biofeedback for student noise levels. You can set it at different levels depending on what is acceptable for a particular activity. It is fun and practical. Kids respond to it and it becomes a game vs. me asking them to use "an inside voice" over and over! I recently visited another school in the district and saw a real pro deal with the slow clean-up situation in a unique way. He had a graph paper chart and timed the class whenever they were cleaning up. It moved it along and the students were helpful in encouraging each other to quickly clean up.

I KNOW that these two items would take care of classroom management situations that I deal with routinely. Every teacher looks for fun ways to get the job done. I've seen both these items deal with noise and clean up successfully. I've already purchased the graph chart paper and I'm ready to roll when I get these supplies!
