Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom has 35 limited English, fifth grade students. Our new math program is requiring huge leaps of knowledge compared to last year, and the speed at which the curriculum is fed to the students there is little time for review or do overs. The frustration level is high. Acquiring a new language is difficult enough, but fifth grade is the point at which the district wants to switch them to full English proficiency. This added pressure is felt by the student.

My students are creating planet reports and PowerPoint presentations. Their grammar is a block to them being understood. They loved learning about the planets, but putting the information into their own words was very difficult. The students were embarrassed to be unable to read their own writing or fluency was halted because of poor grammar.

Another teacher in my school uses a graphic tablet to help her deaf students with grammar and allowing the students to peer tutor the class by doing the assignment from his own seat on the screen in front of the whole class. I got a demo of a Smartboard but hated to put my back to the students and found a graphics tablet allows anyone in the class to participate in the learning.

Your help will allow my students to impress others and themselves with their skills in grammar and math. It will allow any student to show their process so the class can help or be taught by a fellow student instead of just the teacher. Your help will create excitement and "buy-in" to the learning process.
