Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Para Español, oprima numero dos (For Spanish, push number two)" I teach 5th and 6th grade bilingual students in a high-need community.

My students find themselves in a community where their native language is the dominant language, and the necessity to learn English is not prevalent. They speak Spanish at home, at school, and at the bodega across the street. It is hard to instill in my students the importance of learning English as a second language when they easily survive without it on an everyday basis. This is where they struggle - they do not make the bigger connection of how English will help them in the future. In fact, they don't imagine a future for themselves outside of the high-need, Spanish-speaking community they live in now.

On a broad level, I want to help my students create long-term goals for themselves. I want them to imagine a future that consists of whatever they want to be and do. Part of realizing these goals is the importance of learning English. The electronic speaking dictionaries will empower my students to learn the English language and especially help them with one of the most difficult parts of learning a new language - pronunciation.

You have the chance to invest my students not only in learning the English language, but also in their own futures.
