Bringing the World Into a Classroom of 30 Thirsty Minds

My 5th grade students need a set of Britannica Student Encyclopedia.

I teach 5th grade students in a very low socio-economic inner-city school in Utah. More than 80 percent of our students are in the federal lunch program and a large percentage come from homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken.

I am a new teacher. When I entered my new classroom with just a week before school began, I realized we had no encyclopedias. I struggled to pull together a collection of various editions, ranging between 1974 and 1986, and have failed to find several sections. My students are learning how to research information that is vital to their education. Many do not have access to the Internet in their homes. Without encyclopedias and access to the Internet, they are struggling to understand.

By providing an up-to-date set of encyclopedias, my students will learn how to research information and improve their education without the Internet. They will see the world around them without leaving the borders of the state.

This is a chance to change the lives of 30 young people, many of whom have never seen a new encyclopedia before. The information you can provide and the learning opportunity this creates will forever impact the way they look at the world. Right now, they feel no one cares about them and they are stuck in this impoverished community. By providing this "new" education, these kids will see a new world and develop vital tools to provide a way into a better future. Please help them!
