Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have the privilege of teaching a class of wonderful, inquisitive fifth graders in a low-income, high-need community.

My students are enthusiastic learners who represent a variety of learning styles and ability levels. However, as a public school in a low-income community we have limited resources to make math, language skills, science and social studies engaging to our students. Since 95% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, their families also cannot afford to purchase additional academic resources to make learning fun and accessible for their children. My students need visual and interactive resources to build their knowledge base and help them master fifth-grade standards.

An LCD projector would open the four walls of our classroom to the world. Students' learning will be enriched by audio and visual technology that will bring content to life through video clips, photographs, diagrams and sound. Science and social studies concepts will gain deeper meaning when students can see and hear the topics they are learning about. They will understand the circulatory system when they can watch an animated clip of blood flowing through the heart. They will gain perspective on history when they can take a virtual tour of Colonial America. Students will be engaged and motivated to learn when they see real life applications of fifth grade material. Most of my students have little experience with the world outside of their community in Phoenix. I want my students to be exposed to all the rich diversity of the world that their peers in higher-income communities have access to. With an LCD projector, student learning will expand past the four walls of our classroom and the pages in their textbooks. This tool will enable me to harness the wealth of information and content available on the Internet, in film, photography, music and other digital forms.
