My students need 10 copies of "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" and 5 microphone headsets so that they can participate in a "21st century" book club.

We like to remind our students that knowledge is free, you just have to bring your own container. But as it turns out, some of the most exciting knowledge experiences are far from free. These students already know that everything comes with a price tag, but I hope to show them that for once, price will not stop them. They come from a high-poverty area where gifts are an unaffordable luxury. These ten 3rd grade students have qualified to participate in a 9 week-long library enrichment project -- a "21st century" book club in which the book club moves from the traditional round table to the Web.

The problem is, neither the families nor the school can afford to purchase supplies for the project. Some of our students wear the same shirt to school every day and hope only for a math book for the holidays (no joke. . . I wish I were making this up). The students chosen for this project decided they want to do more than just read and discuss a book. They want to engage in discussions with students in other areas of the country, to create podcasts of their reactions to the book, and to blog with each other about the experience.

To do this, students will each need a copy of the book we are reading (The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, by Kate DiCamillo). They will also need a microphone headset to share with another student, which we plan to use for our podcasting and interactive Web chats.

You could make all the difference for these students -- realizing that there are people who care about them and want them to succeed could be just the hope they need to reach their dreams. And what better way to get there than by opening up to other students and sharing the love of reading?
