First Grade Math Should Be Fun!

My students need 7 hands-on math materials and games including Brain Quest, Sudoku, and foam shapes.

I teach 20 very energetic, enthusiastic first graders and I'm always searching for new ways to make learning more fun and to get those little brains thinking. Most of my students are from low income families and they do not have many resources at home.

Over the past ten years, I have noticed a change in our students coming into First grade. They do not have good number sense and they really don't like to have to think. I believe it is because in today's hurried households, children are not playing board games or developing counting skills--they're sitting in front of a tv or playing a video game. I have very few manipulatives to use in the classroom, but I do have a 496 page math book to get through, as well as a homework book with 180 more worksheets. All those worksheets are so tedious and they just teach children to hate math. Math can and should be a fun subject--children will need these basic skills all their lives. I know I can help them develop a better number sense and a stronger foundation in math through the use of these math games and manipulatives.

The hands-on materials that I am requesting will help my students to use life-skills such as trial and error and other critical thinking skills. Playing an adding game with another student teaches the math skill as well as the life-skill of taking turns, playing fair, being a good sport about losing or winning, etc. The magnetic set will give the children a visual and colorful idea of what fractions and geometric shapes are all about. I'm so anxious to start using the games and the magnetic set to help teach the math concepts we have to cover in first grade in a fun and lasting way.

With your help, I know these little ones will understand so much more about math and will be motivated to keep learning. Using the hands-on games and the magnetic shapes will really make the difference between students dreading math period and students actually looking forward to it and enjoying it! These children are just six years old and I have to get them to learn so much in one short year. I need your help to try to put some fun into our classroom. Thank you.
