Organization is the Key to Success

My first grade students, already doing the work needed to be ready for college, need to learn the essential life skill of organization. Although my 90% of my students come from low-income families where English is not spoken at home, and few have parents who have completed any college, they are driven to academic success. Our school's mission, that each of our students be prepared for college, begins with the work we do in kindergarten and first grade. The academic, social, and personal habits they make at this young age will be carried with them throughout their career in school.

My students sit at tables to encourage discussion and group work. As my class is made up of 85% English language learners, the opportunity to talk is essential to their learning. However, at tables, my students lack a space to keep the materials they need on a regular basis - journals, writing folders, and math books. Instead of having these materials easily at hand when they need them, we lose precious learning time to pass out and collect supplies.

Fortunately, this problem is easily solved with a pocket that hangs on the back of each student's chair. They can keep their supplies within easy reach without sacrificing the opportunities for group work that are easily lost when students sit at individual desks. Furthermore, students will now be responsible for keeping track of their books in the classroom, rather than having them regularly collected by the teacher. This will aid them in learning the essential skills of responsibility and organization that they need for success in college.

While this may not seem like the most exciting classroom material, it is a critical piece of a classroom where learning takes priority. My students have so much to learn, and so much motivation TO learn, that I cannot waste another second passing out books, collecting journals, or finding a writing folder. By funding this project, you will ensure that my students get every second of teaching and learning that they deserve.
