Help Encourage 9th Graders to Love Silent Reading

My students need 20 copies each of "The Privilege of Youth: A Teenager's Story" and "The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family", by Dave Pelzer.

I teach two freshmen English classes in a school that services a low-income population. One of the classes contains both special education students, as well as students who are continuing to learn English as a second language. Most of the students in this class tested at a 5th or 6th grade reading level at the beginning of the year. During each class, we participate in silent reading. This is often a struggle, because students do not easily engage in this activity. However, they have recently been introduced to the book "A Child Called It," and most of my students now quickly get settled and are engrossed in their reading. Since my students tested at such a low reading level, reading comes as a struggle to them, which only furthers their disinterest in reading. However, their excitement and interest in "A Child Called It" has really begun to change their attitudes. I would like to give them the opportunity to continue reading the series. I have therefore requested 20 copies of the next two books in the series. I want to make reading fun and enjoyable for them, and to encourage their interest in this particular series. With your help, I will be able to support and encourage my students' love of reading. My students are already begging for the next book in the series, which is any English teacher's dream come true! Reading is an essential skill for an field of study, and so helping my students to get on grade level would ensure their success in English, as well as other fields of study. Please help give them the opportunity to grow drastically in their reading levels, so that they will have a real opportunity to succeed in every classroom.
