Our SpEd students need music that is virtually indestructible! I'm a librarian serving grades k-5 but I am writing on behalf of my special needs students.

One of my 4 SpEd classes came to me to check out another Cd player. They have been through four already this year (the Cd player is often mistaken for a projectile) and all I had were broken Cd players in the AV room. Right now they are without a music station, which is a shame because music is used as a therapeutic tool in their classroom.

When told we were out of Cd players they said they would go buy their own. I pointed out that that doesn't solve the problem. Their Cd player will become a projectile too and their money would be poorly spent. Then the iPod was mentioned. Teachers could load the class music using iTunes (the district allows this software). I pointed out the devices are still not "bullet proof" but then had an idea. Shopping for Christmas gifts I came across speaker pillows that connect to your iPod. I have a Girl Scout Troop that is volunteering to modify the pillows by adding a zipper and protective pouch inside the pillow so the mp3 player will be protected if it is sent sailing across the room. What a nifty idea!
