Sharing is Good, but Sharing Dictionaries Is Not So Good

My students need a class set of 35 student dictionaries to practice their dictionary, language, and writing skills.

Ms. M. Ponderosa Elementary School
South San Francisco, CA Grades 3-5

I'm a 4th grade teacher in a self-contained special education setting. This is what I hear every single Monday when we practice our dictionary skills: "Why do we have to share dictionaries?", "Why is his definition different than mine?", "Jason won't let me find a word, I've been waiting, and it's my turn!". I teach every subject to my 34 students except for Science, which is taught by the other 4th grade teacher, who also has 34 students. I'm the 4th grade Social Studies teacher, so I teach CA history to a total of 68 students. We are the biggest 4th grade class in the district this year.

My school is part of a Program Improvement district, which means that our district, as a whole, is not making adequate yearly progress. Although, we aren't a Title I school, our students have other kinds of needs. As a school, our students' writing skills are not up to par, and writing instruction is very difficult to both teacher and student. I hope that these uniform dictionaries will help students with their language and writing skills.

I need a class set of 35 hardcover student dictionaries. I intend to use these across all curricula. I believe having a class set of uniform dictionaries will help me instruct my students more efficiently in their writing, reading, and dictionary skills.

Please help my students (and my future students) be what they are capable of being. They have the potential to be great writers and storytellers, but they can't do it without the basic materials. In choosing to help me and my class, you will ensure a future filled with vivid and wonderful writers.
