I teach in a wonderfully diverse, Title 1 school. About half of my students are learning English as a second language. We went from 4 half day classrooms to 5 full day classes, and our classroom equipment has been stretched to meet those needs. I am hoping that this grant will help enrich the dramatic play experiences of my children. Many of these children come from homes where educational opportunities are limited and few of them have had any preschool experience before starting kindergarten.

My students benefit in many ways from the dramatic play center in my classroom. This is especially true of my ESL students who have the opportunity to use language in real life situations and practice the language they are learning in class. Presently this center in my room has the basics, such as sink, stove, table and chairs, but I would like to enhance the experience by adding some dress-ups, doll play, and housekeeping props.

I would like to have more dress-up and role play clothes. I also need a high chair and doll bed to enhance our dramatic play. I have also requested some items that will enhance my block center, such as people and vehicles. I feel these items will help in fostering the language development of my students as they play and act out roles.

This project will help my ESL students to use new English skills in authentic and real life situations as they role play in my dramatic play and block centers. Because many of these children have not attended preschool and have not come from homes that are rich with educational opportunities, I feel this equipment will really benefit these young learners. I know they will appreciate and be excited to have this new equipment in our class.
