This 5th grade class is made up of socio-economically disadvantaged English Language learners who want to learn!

Nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, our Title I School is technologically challenged. We have a computer lab, but it rarely is operating. In the class, we have four working student computers. The work order has been in for tjree months to get the other two up and running, but no one from IT has come out. Most of my kids don't even have a computer at home. These children face a future that will, without a doubt, incorporate technology, and to make it in a meaningful way, we need to bring what technology we can into the classroom to level the playing field.

An LCD projector will enable me to bring the world into the classroom. Discussing the population growth in the industrial revolution in the US? I can show a clip from United Streaming that demonstrates the population explosion. Investigating how to check web sites for reliable sites? I can demonstrate using search engines and weeding out bad sites. Planning an informational unit that involves producing a power point presentation? If I can show them one, they will better understand what to aim for. And then after they have made their power point presentations, they can all show them on a big screen to members of the learning community. If these children are to succeed, they must learn to use technology and be comfortable with it, and a big part of can be accomplished by using the technology as a teaching tool in the classroom.

Your donation will allow my students to share a window into a greater world through judicious use of the Internet. There is so much out there beyond MySpace and email, and the sooner they can begin to understand the use of computers in obtaining and presenting information, the better equipped to succeed in an ever evolving world of technology.
