Desperately Seeking Donors

My students need a collection of art supplies, including tempura paints, printmaking blocks and ink, a variety of paper and modeling clay.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an art teacher at CS 134 at a very high needs area in the Bronx. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. They come from poor homes and an extremely low socio-economic neighborhood. Some of them don’t even have a warm bed to sleep in at night, or food in their pantry. As their art teacher I am a constant support for them, and role model. One of the biggest rewards I have is to provide my students with the gift of creativity. I teach them that they have the power to create their own personal artistic vision. In a place where they struggle with so many challenges and obstacles, it is important for them to know that each one of them has that power all on their own.

Being an art teacher in the Bronx has many challenges as well as rewards. Unfortunately this year our school has suffered from many budget cut backs. We are in desperate need of supplies. Art is a means of personal expression. My students look forward to coming to my classroom in order to escape their daily struggles. I teach them beyond the basic tools, techniques, and processes of the art experience. I teach them to create their own personal vision and be creative thinkers. I am writing to you to ask for your help.

The supplies that I have requested will allow my students to create many art projects in my classroom throughout the remainder of the school year. With the paint we will be able to paint pictures of our neighborhoods, learn about various artists like Vincent Van Gogh and paint a landscape just like he did. With the printing ink my students will be able to learn about pop art and who Andy Warhol was. They can make prints of their own and learn about the process of printmaking. I also want my students to create three-dimensional artwork. Aside from materials that I try to collect from home I am also hoping we can use the modeling clay. The students can build animals or people and we can even make an entire city using the clay. You have no idea how much your donation can make a difference in so many students lives.

In order for my students to create this personal vision, it is essential for us to have art supplies. This year our overall school budget was cut by almost 1 Million dollars. Art is always the first thing to get put on the chopping block, so it is hard for me to get the supplies I need for my students. I really want my students to have a well-rounded art program because they deserve the very best. I am asking for paint supplies, print making supplies, clay, paper, and a few other things that I still don’t have in order for my students to get everything they need this year. It would be a shame for my students to miss out on creative opportunities because of a need for supplies. Even if you can only donate a small amount it can make a huge difference in a child’s life.
