I teach art at a Pre-Kindergarten - 8th Grade Elementary School, in which 96% of students come from low-income families. The students are very energetic and love to talk, dance, sing, and make noise. The students are new to having an art program. This is their second year and last year's teacher did not work out due to discipline problems because of their adjustment to having art and behaving in an art-making environment. The younger students tend to think it is play time and the older students tend to lack the confidence in the art abilities and goof off. As a first year teacher, I am hopeful and motivated to change this by the end of the year!

I have been buying more exciting "crafty" supplies, like pipe cleaners, Popsicle sticks, beads, clay, and paint, at art supply stores on the weekends. After letting one boy come into my art room to escape the cold weather in the morning, he made a small craft. That one boy became five students, then ten, and eventually became what I call the "cock-a-doodle craft kids" program early in the morning. It has become a hit and I have to turn students away because of lack of supplies and space in the art room. I want to incorporate more crafty supplies into my projects for all the students as well as a more developed and better equipped "cock-a-doodle craft kids" morning program, but there is no money in the school's budget for art. I would like to add projects such as puppet, collage, book-making, tie dye, and bead making activities.

Most of my experience teaching art is with children who do not get excited over crafty types of supplies because all their homes are well equipped with such supplies. So, one day when a student spotted me making a demonstration artwork for the Pre-K class with pipe cleaners and got excited and asked for one of "those things", referring to the pipe cleaner, I had an "A-ha" moment. These kids have not been exposed to the simplest crafty supplies that were always second nature for me growing up. The seventh and eighth grade students would love these supplies just as much as the Pre-K students enjoy them!

When the roosters sing their "cock-a-doodle-doos" in rural parts of the United States, the city kids at my school will be singing their "gotta-do-a-doodles" once they discover the fun activities the art room has to offer in the early mornings. I hope their distant gleeful smiles warm your mornings as much as they will warm my mornings.
