I am the literacy coach for kindergarten through 6th grade at a high risk school in an urban housing project area. My job is to provide teachers with the tools they need to effectively teach reading and writing in their classrooms. I spend the majority of my day in classrooms modeling lessons for teachers, co-teaching, and observing lessons as part of the ongoing struggle to provide the very best instruction possible for our students.

Very often, the district mandates a change in the curriculum. One of the most promising has been writing workshop. Students write ideas and beginnings of personal narratives in their writer's notebook. The writer's notebook is a place to practice the craft of writing- leads, dialog, internal dialog, story structure, figurative language, endings, etc. From there, students choose a piece, or seed, to begin the writing process. Throughout their journey, students need to share their writing with classmates to receive feedback and improve upon their piece. To share a student or teacher reads the piece aloud and the rest of the class listens. Most students in grades k-6 are not auditory learners. They learn by seeing (visual) and doing (kinesthetic). Making copies of student samples so that others can follow along is wasteful.

A visual presenter would solve that problem. It works like an overhead without a transparency. Students would be able to view each others work easily without the expense of making copies, give and get feedback, and learn about tools to make their own writing better.

Writing workshop has been a huge success so far this year. Students who have never enjoyed writing now write daily and are consciously making decisions about their work like an author. They are trying out different styles of writing. They are excited to share and improve. The one stumbling block we face is the ability to effectively share their work. With the donation of the visual presenter, you can help us overcome that problem and improve writing school-wide.
