This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

You know the missing word in each line, don't you? You are a literate adult, and have mastered the concepts of language. The kindergarten children I teach don't have those language skills mastered just yet. My class of 20 students is in a high-need public school in Arizona. Our school serves over 900 students in kindergarten through 8th grade, and is labeled a Title I school.
Star.
Quick.
Plums.
Just in case you were wondering, those are the missing words from the rhymes above. My students are learning many poems, ranging from rhythmic traditional nursery rhymes to non-rhyming playground chants. They are learning to recite them as well as to read them. The poems are presented to the students in group format, hand printed on chart paper large enough for all to see. The students take turns as the "poem teacher", holding the pointer and tracking the print as we read the text chorally. New poems are added frequently, and the children learn much about language, alphabetic principle, spacing between words, and the left-to-right progression of written text. That's a lot to master during the first year of formal education. The sparse text and rhythmic format make poetry an ideal choice for these very young readers.
I would love to re-create these poems into a collection that each child can keep forever. However, I need 3-ring binders for each child's poetry collection. The collection would be built, poem by poem, over the course of the school year. That way, the students have a chance to learn and love each poem before placing it in their own notebook. The children would maintain their own notebook, and be able to reach for it every day. At the end of the school year, each student will be able to take home his/her own collection of poetry.
Your help with this Pocket Poetry project will ensure that my students will each have a permanent collection of reading material that they can call their own. They will re-read and remember the joy of literacy each time they reach for their Pocket Poetry books.
