Tearing Up the Books

I teach middle school language arts. I teach Language Arts and writing to over 130 students throughout the day.

Our school has minimal resources other than the basics. We are working on improving our writing skills. At this point, the students do not see themselves as writers, despite their strengths. What I have noticed is that many students are constantly doodling and drawing and the quality of this work is high. In addition, they seem to have great confidence in their art work.

As a way to empower the students to combine their drawing and writing talents, I want to introduce them to the medium of altered books. If you are not familiar with this process, I suggest the following website: http://karenswhimsy.com/altered-books/ Basically, the students will take out of date books headed for the recycling bin and turn them into works of writing and art. In order to do this effectively, we need more than plain paper and glue. We need your help!

Please help inspire our students! By allowing them to incorporate art into their writing, the students will start to realize their potential as writers!
