My students need 20 copies of "The Fighting Gamecock".

Reading about people from history can be revolutionary! I teach third graders South Carolina's history, from the beautiful regions of our state and the Native Americans who lived here first, to the colonies and Revolutionary War. We learn about SC's part in the Civil War, as well as the impact of the textile mills in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, all the way to the present. My school serves a lower-middle class community and I love to integrate literacy with our social studies curriculum. The children in my school might not otherwise have access to this literature.

Students have difficulty remembering some of the important people and events that are required by the state standards. I love to grab their attention with a good book that will give them the interesting stories from history and bring it to life.

In order to provide this opportunity to my students, I need books! "The Fighting Gamecock" is about General Thomas Sumter and his role in the Revolutionary War. In history, we learn about the guerrilla tactics General Sumter used to defeat the British. It will come to life as they read Idella Bodie's book, written on a 3rd grade reading level!

Please help make history a revolutionary experience for this group of students! I am amazed at how interested my students are in finding out more about what happened in the past. Why not make learning fun and feed the questions and interest in their minds about how our country became the great nation it is today?
