I teach second and third grade in a small town in Northern California. I have kids at very different reading levels, and to meet all of their needs, I have to provide many books at many levels.

We will be studying dinosaurs for our end-of-the-year open house. Each child will become an expert on a specific dinosaur, then they'll dress up as that animal and become part of a living museum, where they teach visitors what they've learned. Everybody loves it!

Each child needs an appropriate book to research their prehistoric animal. They will use this process to learn about the animal, and at the same time learn to read for meaning, take notes, and write a report. They'll also memorize some key facts to share with visitors. In the past, I have seen this process really grab kids in a way that other assignments may not - they are learners who become experts, and then they are teachers. This is huge!
