Easy-To-Read Books So Everyone Can Read!!

My students need a collection of igh-interest books, including a number of titles from the Brand New Readers series.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade general education in New York. It is an early elementary school (only PK-2) with a devotion to special education (3rd largest special education population in the city). While I teach general education, many of the students in my class still receive services as a part of their IEPs (Individualized Education Plans). It is a public school in an area where many of the families do not even have the money to provide school supplies for their children.

Many of my students either did not go to kindergarten or lost a lot of their prior knowledge such as the letters of the alphabet and letter-sound correspondence during the summer. Most of the books that we have in the classroom at the lower levels are really aimed at Pre-Kindergarten age students. They do not appeal to the older kids who are still struggling with reading. These books usually do not have a lot of plot/character development which make them difficult to be used for many of our lessons. Additionally, due to the intended age of many of these books there is a stigma in the class about having to read the "baby books."

I would like to supply my classroom with the Brand New Reader book sets, which are easy-to read books that are still at a relatively high-interest level. Each set of books revolves around a particular character. While still being simple, the stories still have character and plot development for the students to analyze and make it less obvious to the others that they are behind in reading. Also, these books, with their bright colored pictures and interesting characters, can show struggling readers how much fun reading can be.

You can provide my students with books that will allow them to access easy-to-read books while discovering the joy of reading!!
