I am a K-8 Literacy and Technology teacher in a high-needs inner city public school. After school I am the lead teacher of the Garden Club. The club meets weekly in the spring and summer, and monthly in the fall and winter months. We have a Reading Garden in the front of the school where classrooms plant flowers that attract butterflies. We also have a vegetable garden in the rear of the school with 18 raised beds for planting herbs and vegetables. The Garden Club manages and maintains the vegetable garden.

The Reading Garden was built from a earlier grant in 2005 and the vegetable was built through out the summer of 2008 and funded by our PTA. In the past, teachers have made requests for donations from area nurseries for plants to add to the gardens. Next year, our goal for the school is for K-8 students to plant every plant from seed, maintain the needs of the growing plants, and then transplant the starts into the gardens. In addition to this, the Garden Club's goal for next summer's garden is to grow a variety of vegetables to add to the school's cafeteria salad bar at lunchtime.

With grow lights in several classrooms, it will enhance the teacher's Growing Unit that is currently integrated into all core curriculum. We live in Oregon where the city is surrounded by farms with bounties of fresh fruits and vegetables, but most of our student's families simply can't afford them. As educators we feel our community garden at school helps eliminate some of the disadvantages of this situation. The garden also provides an exciting authentic learning opportunity inside and outside the classroom building student, teacher, family, and neighborhood community collaborations.

While working in the gardens this summer I encouraged students to share their ideas of how they wanted the gardens to go forward. Their wish is for the garden to continue expanding each year. Eventually, they hope to plant fruit trees and a variety of berries so at recess they can have a snack. I feel that it is my job is to do what it takes to make the student's dreams for the garden a reality. I realize the Garden Club needs to take the new additions to the gardens in steps. The step for the spring of 2009 is to add five grow lights to the school's classrooms. With the addition of these new grow lights, I know that we as educators can make the student's visions of expanding the garden a reality.
