Toy Design: A Sculpture Class

My students need a variety of wood boards of different widths and thicknesses to design and complete various sculptures including kinetic sculptures.

After working for Verizon as a cable splicer and electronic technician for 24 years I am now a mathematics/technical skills/art teacher at an alternative high school serving “at risk' students who have transferred from previous high schools where most of them have been unsuccessful. 66 percent of our student body receive free or reduced lunch. Despite past history and circumstances, the school sends 97% of its graduates on to college. My students come from all 5 boroughs and include a few teen moms we have a nursery in the building. Many of my students have had very little exposure to the arts and hands on activities. I find that if they get excited about art they get more engaged in their academic courses.

I have created a course called Toy Design, a sculpture class for students 14-18. Classroom activities provide students with the skills to use many different mediums and tools. We use many materials including paint, paper mache wire, cardboard but mostly wood.

We need a variety of sizes of wood to allow students to create their sculptures that interest them. Most of them love carving and using the electric drills and saws.

Any partial donation of this project will help this unique class empower students to broaden their horizons in a field of art that is new to them.
