The Squadron is ready to fly! I have the most gung ho! math pilots in our middle school's 6th grade. Each student has passed the flight check and has been cleared for take-off. Their mission: to skywrite their accomplishments of mastering the 6th grade skies and take their successes to the land of 7th Grade.

But wait! There seems to be a missing part to each of their jets. It is the very instrument they need for their lofty endeavor, the writing instruments and the sky's themselves.

As their squadron leader I have found them to be more than worthy pilots, but in the meeting room when we go over flight plans I find that I am not able to check the exactitude of each pilots intricate plan. If even one pilot flies out of formation it can be disaster for that pilots grade and the squadron as a whole. We need individual white boards and markers so that each math problem can be followed through multiple steps and shown to me so that I know that each pilot can earn her/his wings and be successful in mastering the 6th grade skies, reaching their destination.

You can help each pilot accomplish their mission by making sure they can show me they are thoroughly prepared to fly. This method of flight planning has in the past shown to yield very effective results in flight test scores.
