Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Math is very difficult for ESOL children. A lot of the problem solving skills necessary to pass the state mandated FCAT test are story problems. The more hands-on experiences I can give my students, the better chance they have of remembering all the vocabulary necessary to be successful on the test. I teach 16 third grade students. I teach in a 98% free- and reduced-price lunch, Title I school. Our children do not have the opportunities that some children have. A lot of my parents do not speak English so they can't help with homework or long projects. All the learning has to come from school.

I want to make Math come alive for my students. I want to put a SMILE on their face when they finally discover something new. I do not want Math to be the scary subject because of all the strange new shapes, symbols and huge vocabulary words. We need more supplies so everyone has the object I'm talking about, not just one example which we usually get for classroom materials. The test data shows our students are weak in problem solving, data analysis, geometry, place value, number sense, and measurement in 3rd grade.

In recent Math seminars and workshops I have attended it is stressed that we need to dig deeper than the textbook. We need to go beyond the literal answers and follow down the ladder of Bloom's Taxonomy to critical thinking skills, analysis, and synthesis. To do that I need more hands on resources to immerse my students for the love of Math. Some of the resources I need are a Problem Solving Word bank, Number Riddles for Problem Solving and Real World Math for Problem Solving. This is a very difficult concept for all third graders because it involves multiple operations in order to solve the problems and it doesn't tell you what operations to use. When students come to these questions on the FCAT, I can't try to help them work them out step by step. But if I had many learning centers going on daily in the classroom, I could help students through all the language to the heart of the question. Place Value is another obstacle for young children. Place Value at My seat and Build a Bridge will give students experience manipulating numbers. For Geometry I need Magna Tiles, and Build & Learn Geometry Kit and foam pieces to show what 3-D figures look like inside and out.

It's all up to you now. Do you want to put a SMILE on a third grader's face when he/she finally can read and understand what a pentagonal pyramid looks like? Or when they yell, "I've got it! I know what they want me to do to solve this story problem." Those are magical words for a teacher to hear. I want to use the materials to enhance my students learning. These materials will help them be life-long learners in Math. You can help put a SMILE on my students faces by helping make this all possible. With all the budget cuts this year, Education lost a major amount of funding. My job is to mold my children for the future. With your help, I know I can make a difference in their lives and make them SMILE when I say it's time for Math Centers.
