I am very fortunate to teach social studies, English, and general "life lessons" to 8th graders at our rural K-8 school in Maine.

Unlike when I was a child, for kids today history is as close as the 1950's! It's hard for us Baby Boomers to imagine, but students in 8th grade today have very few experiences to connect them with the decade of the 1950's. And, because the 1950's was such an important decade in terms of technology, world politics, personal values, and so forth, it is critical that young people know it in order to understand where and what we are as a nation and world today.

My students may not realize it now, but there are valuable resources available to them and those resources are closer than they think. I am talking about people in their community. I would like students to discover the importance of the Fifties by virtually experiencing the lives of the people of that decade. I would like to send my students into the community with digital cameras and interviewing expertise to gather information from these human primary sources in order to create understanding of and gain insight into this time.

You will make it possible for my students to "live" the 1950's through the stories of the Baby Boomers and see the connections between that era and today. How great the world would be if people really understood history, could live in the shoes of the people of that time, and didn't make the same mistakes that were made in the past!
