Earth Alive! DVDs Help Class to Get Out of the Classroom

My students need the Earth Science Action video set from the Discovery Channel.

We are a new high school in New York serving a high-need community. I teach 9th grade Earth Science and this is my 6th year teaching! Wow! Three years ago I helped start this school which has a Media and Arts focus.

The underlying question of my class is, "Why does this place look the way it does?" This question can be applied to almost all fields we cover--and helps us think about how Earth has changed over time. Earth Science is a course built on "models." Whether it is modeling something that happened billions of years ago (solar system formation) or studying things we cannot see (Earth's core) we are constantly having to use our imagination to answer the essential question of our class and uncover the science concepts. I teach a lab-driven class where students do activities at least twice a week. We read, we evaluate, we experiment--but we don't get to "see" too much. And, we definitely don't get to visit all these places we are learning about (Mars! The North Pole! The Grand Canyon!)

Now, I would love to take my students to Arizona - but a much cheaper, and hardly second best solution is ordering the Earth Science Action DVDs. The videos cover fourteen different concepts in 20 minute video segments. I will use these videos not as a primary teaching too, but as a supplement to text and experiments. As a media school, we have the LCD projector and a large white screen in my classroom, but, nothing to show on it! (Well, except IMAX's Cosmic Voyage, rented from Netflix. Spectacular!) Let my students "get out" of the classroom, if only for 20 minutes. Help them to make sense of this place we humans call home.
