Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Preschool is a time to lay the foundation for a lifetime of reading for learning and enjoyment. Although my students are all children with autism, they all respond to books and the letters and words in them. My children are between the ages of 3 to 5. Our classroom is a Special Day Class, located in a regular elementary school.

One of the ways I capture the interest of my students for reading, is to give each child his own book to hold and follow along with, while I read them a story. In the past, I was able to purchase the Classic Boardbook Story Collection from Lakeshore School Supplies, but I only had enough money for 5 sets of books. My classroom typically has 10 students. Unless I can give each student his own book, I need to read to them without their developing the skills to turn pages when indicated and to follow along with the pictures and the text.

I would like to purchase another 5 sets of books to use in our classroom. That way each child could have his own book to read as we discover classical children's literature together.

With your help, it will be possible to provide up to 6 different boardbooks for my students to read along with me at circle time. Hopefully, it will be the start of a love for reading that continues all their lives.
