Stick an Apple in Your Ear

My students need six Apple iPods to assist with their reading skills that are below grade level. These students are not meeting the state standards in the area of reading comprehension.

I am a special education teacher on a team setting. We are the only team at our middle school that promotes inclusion (inclusion is when students identified with special needs are taught with the students who are not identified with a disability.) Our team consists of both 7th and 8th grade students.Students are taught in a multi-age environment.

Many of my identified students struggle with reading. Poor phonetic skills make it very difficult for students to be successful and enjoy assignments that require a significant amount of reading, whether it be a novel or a text book or even a short story.

I would like to incorporate the use of i-Pods into the students' reading curriculum. The students will listen to text using the i-Pod. Our school has access to recordings but no way to listen to them. This tool will serve the students who either dislike reading, or struggle with the process of reading. For the students that dislike reading, this device will be an incentive for them to read. i-Pods are very popular with our students. If given the chance to use an i-Pod in their lesson, most students will become more interested. For the students who struggle with the reading process, this tool will take the focus off of having to decipher words. The i-Pods will increase the amount of pages read by students. Everyone knows the students will get better at reading only by practicing. This will allow the student who to practice independently.

Your help will ensure that students will continue to improve their reading ability. The tool will increase the student's willingness to read. The tool will be the motivator that a student may be lacking intrinsically.
