I teach first grade in a school which only houses kindergarten and first grade. Many of our students do not have books at home. These students are curious about things they have never seen. Some of them have never been outside of the town where they live.

I am attempting to raise reading levels using the Lexile Leveling system by having students read books on their level and then increasing the levels gradually. I do not have enough books in the 0-300 range. I currently use a basal reader, but I really would like to use real books in order to introduce my students to the rich vocabulary, multiculturalism, and interesting characters and places they can read about in real books.

I need several books in the Lexile Levels 0-300 for my students to read so that I can measure their reading growth through Accelerated Reader tests on each book. I need the lower level books to put this plan into action. I know my students will gain much more by reading these books than they would the basal reader because the vocabulary in the basal is so controlled. I am sure my students will develop a love of reading by reading real literature.

You will make it possible to bring each student in my classroom up to the average 1st grade reading level before the end of the year. You will also be responsible for changing these students' lives because they are not as motivated to read the basal reader stories I currently have them reading from. Reading is fundamental to all other learning. By providing these materials, you are ensuring my students' reading success.
