Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade in a small, urban school. We are 80% free and reduced lunch and 45% second language. Our kids come from diverse family backgrounds, including single parent, blended parent, grandparent, and guardianships. Most students eat breakfast and lunch at school. Many of these children have never left their hometown. Most have not seen snow or the ocean or the country. Their world is small, as small as their neighborhood.
We live in a digital age and many of my kids live in homes with no computer, no Internet. The classroom is an opportunity for them to experience them. Our school was recently able to purchase HP computers and LCD projectors for each classroom. New research is showing how using technology improves learning and retention of information. Our district also recently adopted a beautiful new science program. By blending the two, technology and science, my kids are experiencing a whole new world.
We need 7 digital cameras and 2 video cameras. With these cameras, the kids can photograph scientific artifacts in real life and create video presentations and performances based on scientific information. Fourth grade curriculum focuses on Rocks and Minerals, Ecosystems and Plant Biology, and Electricity and Magnetism. Students would then be able to classify and categorize their uploaded photos and turn them into PowerPoint presentations. What could be more exciting to the imagination and inspire a desire for more learning than the blending of technology and science?
You can be the spark that ignites a child's desire to learn, to explore their world, and to expand their horizons. Your donation can provide these kids with the chance to see the world as truly is - a place of opportunity and challenge.
