This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Children Know the Secret . . . The more you read, the better you get! I teach 22 ELL students in an inner city school. Eighty-five percent of my students are on free and reduced lunch. They are eager learners, but often do not have the support or resources at home to extend their learning. They may know the secret, they know they need to practice, but are often left helpless to get the job done.

The best way to learn to read with fluency is to be read to fluently on a regular basis. I strive to empower my students each day to take another step towards success. We provide daily opportunities to practice their reading in school, however, all too often they do not have the resources to continue at home.

Learning to read is one of the biggest highlights of first grade, but it is hard work and takes lots of practice. These six MP3 players will allow me to upload reading material that will encourage and enable my students to continue their learning at home. Not only will they provide the tools to support learning, but they will also provide fluent reading models that will help build their confidence as readers. Success breeds success and this in turn will increase their motivation to continue their efforts.

Your support will make it possible for me to provide the students in my class with access to reading material on a rotating basis. Your help will ensure that my students put "the secret" into practice!
