Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a special education classroom for students with mixed moderate to severe disabilities. My students have severe speech delays and 90% of my students are children with Autism.

Our very limited budget does not allow the school to purchase items desperately needed to help my students develop all necessary communication skills. The school budget is in crisis and the district froze all of our funds for an unknown period of time. This leaves our children without appropriate tools they need to learn.

My students need to be able to communicate with the support of pictures. To make this possible, I need a digital camera to take pictures of items in their environment. We would use the digital camera to take pictures of daily learning items and activities around the class and school. The pictures will then be used on communication devices which my preschool students use to "talk".

Since my personal camera stopped working, I have been unable to create these visual supports for my students. Speech is a right that has been taken away without these picture supports. You have the opportunity to give our students way to communicate with the world. Thank you!
