Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is a combined kindergarten and first grade class of special education students in an urban school district. Our school district has a very high poverty rate and has suffered budget cuts that seriously impact our ability to purchase materials. The majority of students in our school are on free or reduced lunch and come from homes in which educational resources are limited.

Every day, my students' smiley faces cross my threshold ready to learn. Each student brings to our community a unique way of seeing the world and individual differences in the way in which they learn. The impact of autism hinders the majority of the students from learning in a conventional manner. Some of these children have no access to books or the opportunity to have a story read to them. Each student needs an individualized educational experience to learn to read and write to their full potential.

I am looking for interactive materials, specifically TAG readers and books. The reader is used to read the stories aloud to the students and encourage interaction through questioning and response. These books teach reading, phonics, math, and all other areas of the curriculum. They will empower my students to work independently in a fun and exciting way. The Leap Pads that we have in our classroom are old and no longer working. My students miss this experience in our classroom daily.

Your donation will ensure that my students have every opportunity to learn basic skills in the most effective manner for each of them. Your kindness will give my students the chance to display their abilities in the manner in which they are most comfortable. Each of us learns in a different way, and with a different voice. Your help will provide my students the opportunity to meet their full potential.
