Our school has two immersion programs for K-5, in which students learn half of the day in English, and half of the day in either Spanish or Japanese. We also have classrooms for recent immigrants to the United States, in which students learn to speak English and about American school customs. As the music teacher, part of my job is to make these students feel at home while preparing them for future music teachers. One of the most engaging activities in music for students who are learning English is playing instruments. Instruments put all students on an equal footing, and I often need no words to explain how to play.

Guitars are familiar instruments in many cultures, either through folk music or in association with rock and roll. Students are highly motivated to learn to play guitars, and love to play known songs and to compose their own. Our school has only six guitars that are the right size for elementary school students, and all have been handed down from middle schools in our district. These instruments need frequent repair, and students are often frustrated when they cannot get a good sound on the beat-up fingerboards.

We need 3/4 size classical guitars to fit the hands and arms of 4th and 5th grade students. Instruments which fit the students properly allow them to play comfortably and get the greatest enjoyment from playing. Having more instruments will give students more playing time in each class, and help students build their skills faster.

Your help will enable my students to compose their own music on an instrument that is appealing and familiar. You will also encourage a love of music and an appreciation of a variety of musical styles and genres.
