Using Picture Books to Enhance Creative Minds

My students need an assortment of 29 picture books that focus on writing traits, such as "Diary of a Worm" and "Brave Kitty" .

I am a third grade teacher at a Title I school with approximately 23 students in my class. My goal is to motivate and inspire my students to learn the best that they can. My classroom is a place for kids to broaden their thinking skills and become better writers. I believe in every student and know they will become something they never thought they could dream of. Touching lives everyday is why I am a teacher.

Writing is very tough for 3rd graders. Especially at a low income school. They have no motivation to write. Using the 6+1 writing traits encourages students to write. It brings the picture books to life with the activities that go along with them. These activities motivate kids to write and they really do enjoy it. Using the picture books that I have this year, the kids actually get excited when I say, "Get your Writers Notebook out!" Writing has become a new passion for me this year and I am so excited to get more books to implement within the classroom. The 6 traits are easy to use. You just pick 6-8 books to teach each of the skills. Each trait is shown through different picture books. Filling my library shelves with these books will motivate my students to read AND write.

Picture books can show my students how easy it is to incorporate the 6 traits of writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, and Fluency) into their own writing. Having a variety of picture books for each trait will show my students the different ways to approach a particular trait. The more variety of books I have, the better it is to show different traits and it will help my student become better and more successful writers.

Writing is such an essential part in education and in the future of our students. By donating these picture books to my classroom, you will make it possible to make writing fun. You will also motivate my children to read and write. My students will be able to use these books over and over throughout my career to ensure future writers. I know we would be forever grateful!
