I am the newspaper adviser to a great group of Yup'ik students in the Alaskan bush. We're a small staff of seven, but we're doing our best to understand how the media we consume (and create!) attempts to shape our perceptions and the perceptions of others.

As much as we would like to stretch further, our current textbook is strictly limited to student publications, and doesn't even approach other forms of media, much less how to encounter and interpret media from other sources; like blogs, magazines, podcasts, internet sites, etc.

In addition to the lesson plans and projects that I generate for my students, I have been studying different journalism/media texts that discuss the myriad aspects of the media and how it affects our lives. Hands down, the textbook that I think would best empower and inspire my students to continue to become critical consumers and well-informed contributors to the media is John Vivian's "The Media of Mass Communication." It is full of rich information and written in such a way that struggling students can still begin to understand some pretty complex issues and topics. I would love to use this resource to help my students flourish as journalists and critical consumers of the media they encounter!
