I teach 4th grade at a Title 1 school. My students ar part of a high-poverty, at-risk community. We are lacking many of the basic resources needed for the school day.

My students are already at a disadvantage due to lack of resources in their community. Our school does not have a gym to engage in physical activity, and as it gets colder, their opportunity for physical activity diminishes at school. They live in neighborhoods that are unlikely to be safe, which further limits their ability to go outside and get exercise after a long day of hard work at school. Children should have ample opportunity to get out and get their bodies moving. Exercise is not only good for the body, but studies have also shown it does wonders for the mind!

The solution to this problem would be to provide sufficient physical activity incorporated into the school day that will guarantee at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. I propose to provide 15 minutes in the morning and afternoon of kid-friendly exercise/dance videos for students every day. My school can not afford a classroom TV/DVD player, and I will need this to implement my program. I feel confident that exercise will make a difference in how they learn, and how they feel about themselves. A child who feels good about himself will grow up to be a confident adult. Confident adults make strong leaders and productive citizens, and this is what our community needs for the future.

Your help will ensure that my students will receive daily exercise will that not only energize Thier bodies, but it will prepare their minds for all the information they are going to absorb in the day. Perhaps with marked results, this will become a routine that will pioneer student wellness throughout the community.
