Welcome "Home" I teach about 90 students who are in 6th grade and are more than two grade levels behind in reading skills. Our school serves students who live in poverty, students who live at a nearby children's home, students in foster care, and homeless students, as well as the general low income population in our city. Due to the current economy, we also have a high rate of transient students who move away for a few weeks or a few months to stay with relatives, and then return to our school with increased learning gaps.

Students need to feel safe and comfortable in order to learn best, especially the students that I teach. They tend to have stressful home lives due to economic reasons and lack stability and support from someone at home. My classroom is in an old portable and everything is tan - the walls, the floors, the desks, etc. Nothing looks new or fresh. It is dreary and uninviting, although I am working on freshening it up. Any extra money I have, I use on paper, pencils, notebooks, backpacks and other school supplies that the students need so I do not have much left for freshening up this year.

I am hoping to provide a warm, welcoming place for the students. I want to have a reading area that is comfortable and inviting. Putting a rug in that area would define it and give it importance, as well as brighten up the room and add warm to the space. I chose to use "dots" as a theme for our classroom since they are so colorful and versatile. I use dots to color code and organize the room, which also builds the students' confidence since they know what to expect and where needed items are located.

You will be giving these students a fresh, bright, comfortable place to learn - a happy place they will look forward to going to each day. You will be helping them forget about their realities outside of school and focus on increasing their reading skills, which in turn will increase their confidence. You donation will greatly appreciated by these students and me and I will receive deep satisfaction in being able to create a cozy "home" for them.
