As Avi says, "Don't Write Writing - Write Reading!" I am a fourth grade writing teacher in Florida. With the demands of state testing I am inspired to not only teach the students how to be proficient in writing but to develop as young authors.

I am attempting to put together a library of mentor texts that will model for the students different writing skills and topics. My students love read-alouds and having this library will help promote literacy in the classroom. The books chosen support instruction of each of the Six Traits of writing - ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. My students and I would like to put together lessons that will add depth to their essays and stories.

My classroom will need mentor texts in each of the Six Traits from ideas to conventions. The students will be able to refer to these books to improve their writing. Writing instruction can often be dry and boring and these books will help me to enliven the classroom with real examples of published writing.

With your generous support, my students will be able to move from formulaic writing to writing that is creative and inspired. Please help me bring mentor texts into my classroom!
