I am currently teaching IB Biology and Biology Honors. These courses are made up primarily of 10th-12th graders. Our high school is a very small school with limited resources.

We currently have only 1 collegiate level dictionary in our classroom. Due to a funding freeze, we will not be able to purchase any more.

In an attempt to improve vocabulary skills, I have students learn Latin roots. As a part of this endeavor, students have a new root each day and are asked to define a given word with that root and come up a new word containing that root. They often need a dictionary to do this properly. Having more collegiate level dictionaries will encourage students will search and learn on their own, not copy the information from the first person with the dictionary. When the students first began with the roots, they were not very excited about it. Now, they have begun to argue over the dictionary and truly want to search for new words.

Your help will ensure that my students have the resources they need in order to improve their current level of vocabulary development.
