Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Parent involvement makes a difference! I teach chemistry, forensic science, and living environment to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in an urban public high school and parents need to see their child’s work.

More students are taking an interest in sciences, but very few parents are aware of their child’s ability. Each student is taking advantage of the computer based assignments, but when it’s time to show case their work, it is in black and white. This includes photographs of lab experiments that at times are used to aid other students with learning disabilities. The school continues to get parents involved, but with little success. I am hoping to showcase student’s work in sciences in the upcoming months with colorful illustrations. By allowing students to print in color, it will provide them with an opportunity to visualize scientific abstract concepts in real world applications.

My first step will be to promote student learning with graphic illustration and current research on nuclear energy. Students will participate in researching its application as an alternative energy, as a diagnostic tool for medicine and scientific research, as a means for space exploration, as an innovative consumer product, and much more. This will follow with displaying student work and digital artwork in a cardboard frame throughout the school campus. The final step will be hosting a science gallery open house and inviting parents and community members to view students’ work. A color printer will allow students to print color images that can be showcased in classrooms and hallways. It will attract more parents to learn, get involve in their child’s learning, and support their child’s interest. Parent involvement is needed if their child is going to pursue a science career.
